Picture This Photography has long outgrown the camera. The photograph is no longer prisoner to a simple small machine, but has escaped the confines of shutter and lens and transformed not only itself but the way the world sees and experiences itself. The camera has not become obsolete. It is just another tool in a growing arsenal. Images are now everywhere in our lives. In a world of talking heads, our truest language has become visual. The understanding of any new language only expands our experience and our lives. Such new understandings embolden our own means to express the world in which we live and to better understand it. PICTURE THIS is a collective of 17 photographers who share this new language, but all with their own specific and unique visual idioms, facets and redefinitions. The explosive new developments in photography in the last decades have only increased its untold expressive power. In this new millennium, it alone is the primary vehicle of modern consciousness. New photography, through its latest mechanisms and materials, seeks to discover and record not only our candid minutiae but something of the soul of contemporary society. Photography's long-acknowledged power to mirror the face of the world has by no means been abandoned in this exhibition, but now allows us to step through that mirror.
